DCS is suitable for process manufacturing. Automated systems are often used to produce by recipe rather than by piece in a continuous and batch manner. Large scale continuous processing equipment, such as refineries and chemical plants, all use DCS system. Mixed application usually uses PLC and DCS at the same time.

Small system (<300 i / o points) may have less budget, so plc is more suitable. dcs has a global database, which is easier to manage and upgrade, and can play a more important role in large factory applications.
